The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) helps cover dental costs for eligible residents who do not have private dental insurance. Income is the central eligibility factor, but it is calculated in a specific way.

How income is measured

The plan uses adjusted family net income from your tax return, not your gross pay. That figure combines your net income with that of your spouse or common-law partner, after certain adjustments. Both of you must have filed a tax return for the previous year.

The income bands

Under the plan's published rules, eligibility and co-payments are based on adjusted family net income:

Always check the current figures on the Government of Canada website, as thresholds and rules can be updated.

Other eligibility rules

You must be a Canadian resident for tax purposes and must not have access to dental insurance through an employer, pension or professional association. Coverage through a provincial or territorial social program does not necessarily disqualify you.

Who counts in your household

Your household usually includes you and your spouse or common-law partner. Changes such as marriage, separation or a new child can affect your adjusted family net income and eligibility.
